Belleek china hails from the small village of Belleek in Ireland, where each shamrock is hand painted. The company of Belleek started making pottery in 1857, just a decade after the worst years of the Famine. Thanks to the natural minerals occurring in the ground of Belleek, and the nearby River Erne being strong enough to power a mill, the company started making practical kitchen items. Within 20 years, Belleek had become known for beautiful hand-woven china, highly popular in Australia, Canada, and the US - Queen Victoria was one of Belleek’s early customers!
